Zoning

Definition:Zoning is a device of land use planning used by local governments in most developed countries. The word is derived from the practice of designating permitted uses of land based on mapped zones which seperate one set of land uses from another.

Description: The purpose of zoning is shaping the city, namely to designate the uses of land to build a compatible city. Though campared with planning and architecture, zoning has a comparatively short history as a method of planning the style the land is used, zoning decides the use and site of buildings, the density of the city's various kinds of neighborhoods, in small measure, where they are located. In company with the city's power to the tax, budget and comdemn property, zoning is a important instrument for implementing the planning policy.

  1. Zoning is not a topic I have much experience in, but I do know about form based zoning. Are there other unique approaches to zoning which differ from traditional zoning practices?
